Learn the art of relaxation

This CD comprises a series of six deep relaxation sessions which are intended to be followed over a matter of days or weeks. It is primarily an introduction to deep relaxation and it is not intended that the whole CD be listened to without a pause between each session. This is so that you can absorb the feeling of deep relaxation gently over time.

Teaching yourself to relax does not happen overnight, it may take several weeks before you notice any benefit, although the benefits will actually start from the moment you begin the practice. By spending time on yourself, you are taking an active part in and control of your own well-being.

Eileen Hewitson is a member of the Birmingham & District Tinnitus Group. Eileen has taught patients with tinnitus, balance and hearing problems at City Hospital, Birmingham and has run training courses for health professionals to teach relaxation to their patients and clients. Her hearing loss and tinnitus started in her twenties.

An hour of soothing sounds

People with tinnitus often find noise to be more intrusive in a quiet environment. Sound therapy can help by reducing the contrast between tinnitus and silence, helping the auditory system to become less tuned into tinnitus. The sound of the sea coming in on a pebble beach is also a useful, calming aid to relaxation, which in itself can be very helpful for people. It can be used as a way to wind down during a stressful day, as an aid to falling asleep at night, or simply as a pleasant background sound to accompany everyday activities.

The Sound of the Sea on Deal Beach was produced by Andy Horne of Swerve Digital Audio in Deal, Kent. Andy originally came up with the idea of digitally recording the sound of the sea for a friend of his with tinnitus who was given a rather poor quality cassette tape of sea sounds, by the local hospital.
