Thank you for sharing your silence this Tinnitus Week Tinnitus is a condition that’s misunderstood by many. It’s not commonly talked about, and the impact it can have on people’s lives is often trivialised. This Tinnitus Week (1-7 Feb 2021), we wanted to change that and make this ‘hidden condition’ more visible. And, boy, did you help us to do that! We were humbled by the amount of people who came out in support of our #ThisIsMySilence campaign. Hundreds of you shared a photo and your own words across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to explain how tinnitus affects you – reaching hundreds of thousands of others. It was incredibly impactful to read everyone’s journey with the condition, and heartening to hear how many now live well with tinnitus. A couple of our fantastic supporters also shared their stories and expertise with the press, highlighting the mental health impact of tinnitus, the need for an improved tinnitus patient journey, and the link between tinnitus and long-Covid. Watch BTA president and audiologist, Tony Kay, on BBC One’s Morning Live (from 24:45); read about how Christina has found ways to cope in The i; and discover how hearing aids helped 29-year-old Georgina in The Sun. We launched our new short film, which features the sounds of tinnitus, to help people understand what it may be like to live with the condition, and to reassure those that think they're facing tinnitus alone, that we're here to help. Thank you for sharing this too – it’s been a powerful way of raising awareness of tinnitus and the BTA. We want to say a huge thank you too to: Our Tinnitus Week fundraisers - Molly Porteous, Rosemary Douse, Zbigniew Soj/Paul, Marie Da Silva Bleasdale, Ann Vicars, Gladys, Georgia and Yaseen, and the Lockerbillies – who so far have raised a whopping £3,199 Our expert patient panel members – Audrey, Ben, John, Louise H, Louise M, Rhiannon and Sarah – who shared their experiences in our tinnitus journey event Tinnitus Hub for co-hosting our research panel event – plus, RNID and the American Tinnitus Association for joining the panel – which gave updates on the past, present and future of tinnitus research And our generous Tinnitus Week sponsors, Flare Audio, Lenire, Oto and Widex. We’re not done though! During the week, we launched our ‘This is my silence: please listen’ report, which makes three key calls to action that must be taken to improve the patient journey. We’ll continue to push for investment in specialist tinnitus services, a standardised treatment model for tinnitus patients; and improved tinnitus education for medical professionals. We’re already looking forward to Tinnitus Week 2022!
