Tinnitus Adviser Training Course

A key objective of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is to, ‘Encourage and promote the provision of sufficiently trained people for the management/treatment of those with tinnitus.’ The internationally recognised Tinnitus Adviser Training allows us to achieve this by offering a counselling-based model of support for use in a range of settings with tinnitus patients/clients.
Delivered by an experienced team and led by a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Registered Psychotherapist, the course aims to build on existing experiences to enable participants to become better equipped to help and support people with tinnitus.

The Tinnitus Adviser Training offered by the BTA is the only course of its type in the UK and is open to people from all sectors of the tinnitus community.

The Aims of the adviser training is

  • to raise participants’ awareness and increase their understanding of the use of counselling skills and the counselling process, with a focus on the process of adjustment to living with tinnitus
  • to provide an opportunity to practise counselling skills
  • to evaluate personal strengths, concerns and issues when working with tinnitus patients/clients
  • to increase participants’ understanding of the medical background to the condition of tinnitus, and introduce them to some of the practical management aids available at present

The training consists of input on basic counselling and listening skills coupled with how to respond appropriately to the many enquiries that are received.

There is also input on tinnitus as a medical condition and the audiological services available, so that you have knowledge to share with the people you support.

Who should attend
We welcome professionals such as hearing therapists, audiologists, hearing aid dispensers etc as well as those working in a social work, voluntary or community setting.

The training team
Trainer: Natalia Pliakou Lecturer, Chartered Counselling Psychologist, HCPC registered, BPS Applied Psychology Practice Supervisor, practitioner in NHS
Course organiser: Marcus Bowen BTA Events Manager
Each course will also have input from practising audiologists, ENT consultants and researchers.

Medical session

This session is run by two experienced tinnitus professionals drawn from a bank of clinicians and research scientists. The aim is to allow course delegates to ask any questions they may have about any aspect of tinnitus or hyperacusis, and by using two professionals, we aim to demonstrate the differences of opinion that sometimes exist in this complex field.

Audiological services talk

This session will be split into three parts:

  • Part one - the tinnitus patient and audiological services
  • Part two - the treatment/management options
  • Part three - relaxation taster session
