Taking Tea for Tinnitus

Tea parties are being held up and down the country in August to raise awareness of tinnitus, the debilitating hearing condition that affects one in eight adults throughout the UK, and to raise funds for Tinnitus UK the only national charity focussed on supporting those living with the condition.

Tinnitus is defined as the experience of sounds with no external source, most commonly ringing or buzzing, but sometimes experienced as whooshing, clicking or even music. Many people aren’t troubled by sounds they hear, but for over 1 million people in the UK, the condition has a significant impact on their quality of life, with stress, anxiety, depression or sleep problems commonly experienced.

To highlight the condition, supporters are being asked to take “Tea for Tinnitus” – whether that’s a sedate afternoon tea with Earl Grey, cakes and sandwiches, a flask of builder’s brew on top of a windy hilltop or a refreshing Moroccan mint tea with some sweet and sticky baklava, anything goes, as long as there’s tea involved!

Sabiya Hussain, Tinnitus UK’s Fundraising and Supporter Engagement Manager comments:

“We’re looking to build on the success of previous Tea for Tinnitus events held before the pandemic and we are delighted that people are able to meet up again and share a cuppa. We want to raise money to provide more people with the support they need to manage their tinnitus effectively. Learning to relax properly is one of the best things you can do to help manage tinnitus. And what’s more relaxing than sitting down with a nice cup of tea, and maybe some cake?”
